I lie with holes in my roof over my head Here I lay on this broken bed Grass growing in my yard reaching my knees A blanket of dust covers my floor; I can't walk without a sneeze No food for my children to eat All three can be seen walking the streets Hands outstretched reaching into strangers' pockets Taking anything they can get Here I lie with holes in my roof over my head I can't sleep because water keeps wetting my bed Water dripping; water rising Children screaming; children crying Empty stomachs and full heads Food for brain but no food before they go to bed Schools and churches praying for my soul I'm the one digging my own hole Roof with holes House sitting on poles Children in the swamps Blinking street lamps Tiny skirts and high heel shoes Dancing on poles and singing the blues Money in my pocket Blurry eyes in my socket I have holes in my roof and water's wetting my head My babies are crying and I can't even buy bread It's more than I can do to send them to school well fed My needs are more than theirs I need to survive and not give in to my fears My eyes are blood shot as I cry blood for tears Give me a chance to cover these holes in my roof I want to move on to a place that's waterproof
